What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a science, art, and philosophy of healing that has been around for over 100 years. In fact, it is the fastest growing natural health care profession in the world. In the 20th century, this time-tested practice has gained respect as a safe, drug-free, and natural treatment for headaches, joint pain, spinal disc conditions, and strains, sprains, and other injuries. Chiropractic can also offer significant relief for allergies, asthma, digestive problems, and other disorders.

Chiropractic deals with the realignment of the structural framework of the human body -- mainly the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. It recognizes that all functions within the body are controlled by the nervous system. When a nerve is impinged, an imbalance of nerve impulses to the destined body part occurs. If it is a nerve that innervates (supplies) a muscle, spasms and pain can result. If it is a nerve that innervates an organ such as the liver, the ability of the organ to do its job is diminished. If the nerve is innervating a portion of the skin controlling our ability to sense touch, tingling or paresthesia can occur.

All of the nerves below the head pass through the spinal column first. If one or more of the spinal vertebrae -- the bones that make up your “back bone” -- are not functioning properly, this could cause compression of the nerves running through that particular vertebra. Compression, ever so slight, can interrupt the flow of nerve impulses to its destination, resulting in altered function. A chiropractor will correct these imbalances by freeing up vertebrae so that proper function will return.

“Chiropractic” comes from the Green word “Chiropraktikos” meaning “effective treatment by hand.” By gently manipulating misaligned vertebrae, pressure is released on joints and nerves, and muscular tension is relieved.

A Brief History of Chiropractic

The first recorded chiropractic adjustment was performed on September 18, 1895 by Dr. Daniel David Palmer, a Canadian-born teacher. Dr. Palmer was, at the time, studying the cause and effect of disease. His patient was Harvey Lillard, a janitor working in the same building as Dr. Palmer in Davenport, Iowa. Mr. Lillard, who had complained of hearing problems for over 17 years, allowed Dr. Palmer to examine his spine. Dr. Palmer discovered a “lump” on Mr. Lillard’s back and suspected that a vertebra might be out of place, which he then repositioned with a gentle thrust. After several such treatments, much of Mr. Lillard’s hearing was restored.

Since Dr. Palmer’s first chiropractic adjustment, the art and science of chiropractic has progressed significantly. Today, advanced diagnostic procedures, sophisticated equipment, scientific research, and the growing acceptance among other health care professionals makes chiropractic a popular health care choice.

What Can Chiropractic Do For You?

Chiropractic treatments called spinal adjustments are gentle, comfortable, and highly effective. People of all ages can receive chiropractic care to stay healthy, including infants and the elderly. Years of training, education, and experience enable a chiropractor to determine how chiropractic care can benefit you and your family. Chiropractors are highly educated, caring professionals who are sensitive to the natural health care needs of your family.
