What is a Subluxation?

The spinal column and nervous system control literally every system in our bodies: memory, breathing, glandular functions, organ functions, muscle tension, even your emotions. A subluxation is a misalignment of one or more of the twenty-four moveable bones of the spine, which can irritate the nerves and disrupt the body’s ability to send “command center” messages through the spine to different parts of the body such as the tissue, bone, glands, and organs. All parts of the human body require proper nerve energy and a flow of information to order to function properly. If left uncorrected, a spinal malfunction can interrupt this internal communication system and cause pain, muscle and organ dysfunction, and other imbalances. The purpose of chiropractic is to correct the subluxation by helping to restore the misaligned vertebrae to a more normal position, thus allowing the nerves to properly communicate with the rest of the body and let the body heal itself -- safely and naturally.

Subluxations are sometimes referred to as the “silent killer.” A subluxation can often exist undetected and slowly undermine one’s health. Studies have shown direct correlation between “minor” curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs. Maintaining a healthy and well-aligned spine is extremely important and is the most overlooked key to staying healthy.

What Causes Subluxations?

Subluxations are caused by any stress (physical, mental, or chemical) that a person cannot adapt to. Common causes include the following:

  • A difficult birth or delivery
  • An auto accident
  • A fall, no matter how long ago
  • Stress and strains of our busy lives
  • Bad posture
  • Intense emotional stress
  • Surgery
  • Drug use or other medications
  • Pushing yourself too hard
  • A mild, unexpected jolt
  • Personal, work, and/or sports injuries
  • Hormone imbalance issues including menopause and PMS
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Immune system disorders
  • Repetitive stress injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headaches, sinus problems, and allergies
  • Osteoporosis and degenerative joint disease
  • Nutritional deficiencies

Many people have vertebral subluxations and don’t even realize it. Left uncorrected, subluxations can cause joint and nerve damage, decreased emotional health, as well as reduced efficiency of the organs and immune system. Long-standing subluxations can cause permanent spinal damage. This is why regular spinal check-ups are suggested for all members of the family. Periodic chiropractic check-ups can be helpful. Many patients report more energy, vitality, and better overall health.
